An Aged Self: The 19th of April 1999 – Portland, Maine

(found by a clock with a cracked face)

Dear Leonard,

You are becoming somewhat of a repository for these sorts of stories. I hope they don’t annoy you or anything. If they do, please, you should let me know. But weird things keep happening. At least another weird thing happened last night.

I was coming home from Paolo’s. I was in a certain state of mind and walking up the stairs very cautiously and using both my hands. I come to the top of them, like always, and I step into my bedroom. I turned the light on.

The desk chair at the foot of my bed swiveled around, and a man stood out of it.

“Relax,” he said. He walked towards me.

And there was something in the way the man stood and walked and spoke that struck me as being so familiar. Everything about him reminded me of someone that I know, but I just didn’t know who.

“Relax,” he said again. I could have. I probably should have. But the familiarity of the man just made me so uneasy. He kept walking towards me.

He walked stooped and ragged. Wrinkles hung from his forehead and cast shadows all around his face. The only thing that shone through were the man’s eyes. Blue eyes that might have shone from a family photo or maybe even a mirror.

“Just let me say one thing,” he said. His palms were facing me, and he kept walking towards me.

I didn’t, though. He got close enough, and he extended a hand towards me. I grabbed it. From fear I pulled it. I sent the old man tumbling down the stairs behind me.

I heard him crash. I heard him crumple. I heard him cry out in pain. I sprinted down the stairs and knelt beside him.

“I could have done so much more,” he said, with his eyes closed and his head against the tile floor. “You can still do so much more.”

I looked down at the man, into his face and into his eyes, and I saw something familiar again, and perhaps he saw the same familiarity in me.

“Do you want some water?”

He nodded.

I let go of the man’s hand, and I went into the kitchen. With a glass, I came back to the foot of the stairs. There was no one there. He was gone.

What did he want to tell me? I’ll find out one day. I suspect I may soon.

Regards,

Ulrich
